OFL Says Poverty Should Top Ontario Priorities
Posted on March 02, 2015
When the Ontario government sits down to draft the 2015 budget priorities, the OFL hopes poverty will be front and centre. In its submission to the Ontario’s Finance Committee, the OFL laid out a strategy for targeting poverty at every level: from childhood to retirement.
“Poverty transcends the acutely felt impacts on individual families and affects entire communities,” said OFL President Sid Ryan in his submission. “In short, poverty is unfair, unjust, and incompatible with efforts to build an equitable society. It is for these reasons that the OFL has focused its submission on recommending strategies to alleviate poverty."
Among the OFL’s 15 recommendations is a call for universal childcare and pensions, affordable housing, free college education, interest-free loans for students, and comprehensive labour law reform.
